Action 2010

Safai Karmachari Andolan organized a major dharna on 30th November 2007 at Jantar-Mantar Delhi attended by a very large gathering of women, men and youth from all over India. It was followed by a National Consultation on 1st December 2007 at which a large number of representatives of peoples organizations and movements have pledged support to achieve the objective of freeing the nation from the scourge of manual scavenging. At this consultation, a decision was made to launch the ' Action 2010 ' programme, which is a three year intensive and focused campaign to eliminate the manual scavenging practice completely before December 31, 2010.

On the eve of the New Year, 1st January 2008, Safai Karmachari Andolan (SKA) has launched the ‘Action 2010’ for the elimination of manual scavenging at India Gate, New Delhi at 5.00 pm. There were hundreds of people celebrating New Year 2008. SKA team from four States of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan lighted candles. Slogans like ‘Maila Pratha Band Karo’ (Stop Manual Scavenging), ‘Maila Pratha Se Hame Chahiye Azaadi’ (We want freedom from Manual Scavenging) were raised. Approximately thousand pamphlets titled “Eradication of Manual Scavenging-Action 2010” were distributed among people. The raising of slogans, distribution of the pamphlets generated a good enthusiasm and curiosity among the people. Many of them came personally to the team members to know about the campaign.
